How to Make Black Cats and Skeletons

While in the Other World, Coraline encounters a cat that she has only recently met in the Real World. The enigmatic animal has the ability to move between the two worlds –- but only speaks in one.

According to director Henry Selick, the cat is “Coraline’s reluctant guardian angel because –- unlike all of the ‘Other’ characters –- he doesn’t have buttons for eyes. It is in fact the same cat, and it can speak in the Other World. It can travel between worlds at will because there are cat ways in and out of most any place.”

LAIKA Participates At North America’s Largest Animation Festival

Coraline continues to receive recognition

SEPTEMBER 21-25, 2011: At the 2011 Ottawa International Animation Festival, LAIKA presented a broad look behind the scenes of Coraline to hundreds of students from the region at the National Gallery of Canada.  As part of the event, the shortMoongirl was screened.  LAIKA also sponsored the popular Salon des Refusés, a late-night screening of short films rejected by the Ottawa jury.

In addition, LAIKA/house’s “Holiday Party” competed in the festival’s Promotional Animation category.  To read more about the 2011 festival, click here.
